My New Old Favourite: Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F♯A♯∞

Now I’ve been a fan of Godspeed You! for a wee while now, but most of that love has been reserved for their 2000 magnum opus Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, but recently I have found myself enamored with their previous outing F♯A♯∞. Both albums share similar sounds, but F♯A♯∞ feels darker and more emotionally powerful in many ways.

F♯A♯∞ moves through three lengthy songs (roughly 16, 18 and 30 minutes respectively) in a similar way to an orchestra, splitting these ‘movements’ up into smaller tracks on the CD version. Like an orchestra, the band, which can consist of up to nine members, utilize a great number of instruments into the songs, along with field recordings of sounds and dialogue, as well as other real world noises. It all slides together to create a potent atmosphere that feels as old and as natural as the hillsides, yet is heavy with pollution.

But the most striking thing about this release is just how well the powerful and ominous emotion resonates in the listener. Like all good post-rock, it utilizes the harmonies and the crescendos magnificently in a way that draws the full power out of the sounds they are making, which is something that some bands like this tend to forget amongst all the experimenting.

Donington has always attracted the biggest names in rock and metal to its traditionally huge festival and 2010 is no different.

This pilgrimage of the metal hordes from across the world is this year rewarded with a fantastic first announcement.

Firstly we have the daddy, the grand beast of rock, the band that is seemingly synonymous with Donington, namely the one and only AC/DC.

Having one of THE definitive rock bands of the last 40 years headlining the first day is a coup of massive proportions. Anyone who caught a glimpse of their shows in 2009 knows just how amazing a performance we are due in June.

As if that massive coup wasn’t enough, also on that announcement was supergroup Them Crooked Vultures who lets not forget comprise a quarter of Led Zeppelin, a third of Nirvana and Josh Homme! They were truly astonishing live last year, rocking venues up and down the land with their dirty bluesy rock.

Last but by no means least come Stone Temple Pilots. This is amongst their first batch of European shows since reforming in 2008. Always a cult band, this represents a lot of their newer fans a first chance to see them live.

If Scott Weiland pulls out a performance like he is undoubtedly capable of, then this could be a highlight of the entire weekend, regardless of who else is yet to be announced.

This doesn’t even touch on the 6 other great acts announced (which include the mighty Deftones, Megadeth and Motorhead no less), so Download 2010 is in a healthy state already. Roll on the next announcement, and June 2010 with 110,000 metalheads rocking out to hopefully the best lineup in Donington history.

Erykah Badu pushes back her album "The Ankh," again!

Erykah Badu’s new album has been pushed back many times. New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) was slated for a 2009 release, then they said it will be out this February (unless it leaks then Badu will not release it at all) and now it’s scheduled to be out on march 30th, 2010. Yes, it got pushed back a whole month. This is probably a move by the record company to make room for a single in time for the album to build some buzz. Chris Brown -"Holdin' On" EXCLUSIVE!!

Finally a song that C-Breezy can hold his hat on. I have been searching for that song that could validate his releasing the last album, but I never found it. “Holdin’ On” is a step in the rite direction. The song is believable and heart-felt. 2 more joints like this and he may be able to pull some fans back. The key is to open up Chris, not something any of us like to do, but if you want your career to get back to what it was… go back to basics. This songs is a great follow to the feature with Juelz Santana… remember ppl he started with “Run It” feature Juelz, then “YO”… maybe now it is “Back to the Crib” and “Holdin’ On”. Speak on it!!!

On the Side Mittens Pattern

Finally!  It’s ready!

And there was much rejoicing in the land!…

Call it bragging if you want to, but I love my On the Side Scarf.  I loved designing it, I love making it, I love wearing mine, and a lot of other people seemed to like it as well.  Because of this, I decided to make a pair of mittens to complement the scarf.

I decided to make the back of the hand match the On the Side scarf exactly but the palm of the mitten is a smooth and easy stockinette.  This makes it both easier to grasp things and easier to knit: win-win!

Also, because I wanted the entire back of the mitten to look like a complete entity, I did not want the thumb increases to show and detract.  So, I hid the increases along the side seam for a smooth uninterrupted look.

Though these only come in two basic sizes, I found that it is very stretchy and can fit a very large range of hand sizes.  Try it on as you go for a perfect fit.  You can also knit it in a smaller or larger gauge to vary the sizes available even more.

Sizes Available: Women’s small/medium and Women’s medium/large

Finished Measurements:  Wrist circumference: 5”-9” (6”-10.5”);  Length: as needed;  Palm circumference (just above thumb, not including thumb): 6.5”-9” (7.5”-12”)

We can’t believe we got our cyberhands on this video. This is Lady GaGa’s highly-touted appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She is looking as fierce as usual, the head piece is new and the ball and chain confirms her direction towards a more S&M look. She took over the world and this is just the cherry on top. Now, let’s hope this catapults “Bad Romance” onto the top spot on the Billboard charts so she doesn’t lose her winning streak, although we don’t want to break Mariah’s record, we figured Mariah broke enough records.
